Bethel Reports collection, 1951-2014
Scope and Contents
The Bethel Reports collection dates between 1951 and 2014 and covers 43.5 cubic feet. These reports range in topic from departmental reports, financial information, accreditation, and a variety of other studies from the College and Seminary.
The North Central Career Development Center series contains studies of data and statistics regarding Bethel Seminary.
The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools series primarily holds reports from studies done by the association on Bethel Colleges and Seminary, many involving accreditation.
The Finance series dates between 1959 and 2012 and holds mostly audits and reports on budgets, especially regarding retirement. The Bethel University Foundation sub-series deals with the organization managing Bethel's financial assets.
The document "Christian Conflict: Making Sense out of Science and Religion in the Encounter with AIDS" was a course proposal for a grant by the Templeton Grant. It was put together by Sandra Granstrom, Steven McNeel, and James Reynhout.
The Institute for Reconciliation and Social Innovation was written by the Institute Planning Team in 2009. It was a proposal to develop IRSI under the structure of Bethel University.
The Task Force - Future Educational Needs folders was created with crossover between the Baptist General Conference and Bethel. It contains supplemental information to the report "Future Needs of the Baptist General Conference in Higher Education" dating to around 1980.
The Diversity series dates from 1993 to 2001. The 1993 Blanding Fellowship Grant was titled "Empowerment by Storying Around: Developing and Presenting Stories Of and By Migrants and Non-Migrants Storying Together As a Means for Facilitating Positive Change in Individuals and Groups." It was written by Patricia Beckford. The Multi-Cultural Student Interviews was compiled by Jeannette Bakke and focuses on the Seminary. Between 1992 and 1995, the McKnight Foundation sponsored a project "Achieving Cultural Diversity at Bethel College", spearheaded by Ronald Harris. "Ensuring Access to Higher Education for Underserved Populations" was a proposal submitted to the William Randolph Hearst Foundation in 2001.
The Athletics series focuses on the Athletic Training Education Program evaluations and self-studies.
The Marketing series dates from 1959 to 2002. The Educational Television Committee was run by Minnesota Private College Council, within which Bethel was represented by Clifford Larson, and holds primarily meeting minutes. Lucius Butler was a media consultant who visited Bethel in 1975 and reported back recommendations. There are marketing plans from the 1980s detailing promotional initiatives at Bethel. The Comprehensive Study of Bethel College Publics from a Marketing/ Recruitment Perspective was created in 1987 by the Phoenix Marketing Group. The Jackson Report dates to 1989 and held information from focus groups at the Seminary. The Highlights of the Marketing Plan dates to 1990 and was for the Seminary. The Focus Group Research on Bethel Seminary Women: Present Students, Alumni, Former Students was written by Leta and Philip Frazier and was prepared for the Marketing Team at Bethel Seminary. Targeting the Market: A Market Research Summary for Bethel College was put together by Schultz Ward Prentice in 2002. The Manual of News and Publications Services for Bethel College and Seminary was put together by Florence Johnson.
The Higher Education Facilities Act folder holds information about the history of financing the Arden Hills campus. The Minnesota Higher Education Facilities Authority booklets date to 1972, 1978, 1998, and 2004. They deal with the First Mortgage Revenue Bonds. The Minnesota Higher Education Facilities Authority binder folders hold the contents of a binder by the same title, holding materials dating to 1998. The Development Program by M.G. Neale dates to 1960, and has input by the architectural firm Hammel and Green. The Physical Facilites Needed for a Building Program Extending to 1971 dates to 1960, as does the Architects' Preliminary Space Calculation for the Total Educational Program of Bethel College Up to the School Year 1971-2. The Land Utilization Study contains parts on the community and neighborhood analysis and a general land use plan, dating to 1963. Also dating to 1963 is the Preliminary Site Development Plan, dealing with the new Arden Hills property. The Development Program booklet dates to 1964 and shows the new Arden Hills property and sketches of the proposed Seminary complex. The Proposed Amendment to the Comprehensive Village Plan folder dates to 1966 and deals with the Village of Arden Hills proposal for residential housing development. The Academic Feasibility Study was prepared by Ellerbe Architects and indicates the design of the future college buildings on the Arden Hills campus. The Science Addition Task Force binder dates to 1978 and focuses on constructing new science facilities. The Programming/ Space Planning Study for the Community Relation Center was for the development of a chapel and concert hall, eventually resulting in Benson Great Hall and the Community Life Center. This document was produced by Bernard Herman Architects in 1987. The Campus Masterplan dating to 1994 and 1996 contains the campus existing conditions and proposals for building. The Campus Center Interim Report dates to 1996 and was produced by Sasaki Associates, as was the Science, Art, and Technology Expansion Campus Center written in 1997. The Campus Master Plan for Bethel Seminary San Diego was written in 1998. The Pedestrian Crossing Study of 1998 and conducted by Stanley Consultants. Also produced by Sasaki was oversized architectural designs of the Student Center, predicating the Brushaber Commons. The documents dating to 2001 were produced by Sasaki Associates. The University Commons booklet was part of the Taking the Next Step Campaign and projects the creation of Brushaber Commons. The Housing Profile is an oversize booklet from 1986 holding statistics on on-campus dorms.
The Employee Satisfaction Survey was put out by the Public Relations and Marketing, Special Events, and Church Ministries in 1997. The 1998 Employee Satisfaction Focus Group Feedback was presented to the PAAC.
The Non-Matriculation and Matriculation Student Survey Projects date to 2006 and 2008. These studies were produced by Merge2Media.
The Bush Foundation funded several programs at Bethel, such as SPECTRUM: Scholars Pursuing Educational Competencies To Reach Undergraduate Maturity. Evaluating Student Outcomes: Teaching Beyond Content was a project looking at the outcomes of the General Education Curriculum and develop faculty. Educating in a Technological Society was a grant written by Barrett Fisher to increase proficiency in information technology.
There are three binders of the Crisis Management Plan from 2007. One binder includes the Emergency Response and Management Plan put together by Andrew Luchsinger in 2014.
The Provision for the Library at Bethel College and Seminary is a report from a survey from 1955 by Ernest J. Reece. The Report of the Library Self-Study was put together by the Library Committee in 1957. In 1966, Philip VanDeVoorde wrote a report on Patron Use of the Bethel College Library Catalog.
The Education Studies Committee document is a compilation of meeting minutes dating from 1955 to 1958. It also contains some reports from various studies.
The Dean's Report to the President book dates from 1957 to 1975, and are reports from the Dean of the College. The Dean's Staff book dates between 1968 and 1976 and contains mostly meeting minutes.
The Seminary series dates from 1958 to 2011 and contains various self-studies and reports on accreditation. Glenn Samuelson did both reports on curriculum planning from 1959 and 1960. The Report of the Curriculum Committee was headed by Clarence Bass. The Recruitment of Students for the Seminary was written by the Admissions Committee consisting of Alphin Conrad, Reuben Omark, and Virgil Olson. In the same document is Clarence Bass's A Philosophy of Pastoral Placement. The 1976 Consultation involves the Lilly Endowment and a Propram for the Development of Financial Resources in Theological Education: A Pilot program for the express use of Fuller Theological Seminary and six other selected seminaries. Why the Seminary: An Introduction to the Report of the Auburn History Project was written by Robert Lynn and involves the Lilly Endowment. The Focused Report on Bethel Theological Seminary West Campus was directed at San Diego and was produced in 1984 for the Commission of Higher Education, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Association of Theological Schools. The Preliminary Report on World Service Study Center and Graduate Education in Missions and Cross-Cultural Studies was produced in 1985 to increase the effectiveness of students preparing for missionary work or other multi-cultural ministry. The Doctor of Ministry Program Evaluation Report was completed in 1987 by Samuel Schutz. Edward Buchanan produced the final report of an In-Depth Study of Pastoral Roles and Functions and Their Relationship to the Development of Curriculum at Bethel Theological Seminary in 1988. The Focus Group Discussions Report regarding student and pastor perceptions of the Seminary and future marketing needs was prepared by the Communication Associates in 1989. NCG Research produced the Needs Assessment Report in 1989. The Pastoral Roles/ Funcions Study titled "A Behavioral Science Approach Toward the Development of Curriculum for Theological Education" was written by Edward Buchanan for the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. The Institutional Goals Inventory Report was written by Edward Buchanan in 1989. The Annual Reports dating from 1981 to 1989 focused on the goals and objectives from the various departments listed. The dated folders focus on statistics. One copy of the 1990 Self-Study is an original draft. The Profiles of the Ministry, Inventories, GRE Reports, and studies of students and alumni were all conducted by Edward Buchanan in 1990. Seminary Vision A.D. 2001 Committee was from 1992 and looking planning forward to a new millenium. The Progress Report from 1998 was from the project Transformational Leadership Curriculum. Another report from that year was Developing a World Class Curriculum for Leadership Development. The Improving Leadership Preparation for Congregational Ministry was a proposal submitted to the Lilly Endowment in 1998. The Seminary Village Apartment Comparison Research Binder contents were from 2001 and put together by Pamela Hudson. The Seminary Vision AD 2018 was put together in 2009 to plan for the next decade. The Minnesota Consortium of Theological Schools sub-series consists of mostly meeting minutes, but also planning and reports.
The National Association of Schools of Music Self-Study Report was conducted in 2006 to apply for membership by the Department of Music.
The Education series primarily focuses on studies and accreditation for the Department of Education. The Status of the Bethel College Program in Secondary Education was prepared in 1955 for the Director of Teacher Certification from the State Department of Education. The Teacher Education Program Report file from 1967 was for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. The Teacher Education Advisory Committee document contains mostly meeting minutes.
The Social Work series focuses on studies and accreditation for the Department of Social Work. This includes the application for approval of the social work program to the Council on Social Work Education in New York.
The Nursing series contains developmental material for the Department of Nursing, as well as accreditation studies. The binder Determining the Advisability and Feasibility of a Nursing Program in a Liberal Arts College was produced by Thomas Johnson in 1981, in the early days of the Bethel Nursing Department. The Frogtown Mobile Nursing Clinic binder contents are in corresponding folders. They date to 2006 and provide a the Business Plan for nursing clinics in the Frogtown neighborhood in Minneapolis. The Evidence-Based Practice Notebook: Worker Requirements for Bethel Nurse Run Mobile Clinic was submitted in 2007.
The Data series records data on faculty, students, enrollment, academic programs, and other statistics. The Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board basic data series was put out in 1994 as an enrollment survey.
The Self-Studies series date between 1951 and 2010.
The Development and Planning series dates from 1959 to 1985, and focuses on the future planning for the college and seminary.
The PACE binder is from the Program in Adult College Education and dates to 1989.
The College Program Reduction binder dates between 1983 and 1984 and deals mostly with program review.
The Manual for Ecclesiastical Endorsers binder is from the General Commission on Chaplains and Armed Forces Personnel. The Manual dates from 1979.
The Seminary of the East binder dates to the end of the twentieth century and focuses on the merger with Bethel Seminary and the Conservative Baptist Seminary of the East.
The Honor Court binder deals with the Annual College Court of Honor hosted by Jaycee and dates to 1987 and 1988.
The Management Information Systems Project Recommendations binder was written by the Office of Vice President for Business Affairs. It dates to 1983.
Two documents on the Website date to 2008 and 2009.
The Bethel Student Culture: an Ethnographic Study of Bethel College Students was produced by Harley Schreck, Judith Moseman, Jim Koch, Delana Gerber Brinkman, and Carolina Warner in 1992.
A Plan for Prevention of and Education Regarding Sexual Harassment and Violence was presented to Minnesota Attorney General in 1993.
The OneVoice SWPagency documents focus on CAPS/GS, the College of Adult and Professional Studies and Graduate School, dates to 2010.
The Foundations of Christian Higher Education by the Christian College Consortium were issued in 1979 and 1983.
The Perceived Affective Outcomes of Christian Liberal Arts Colleges - An Alumni Survey of the Christian College Consortium was written by David Parkyn in 1985.
Anderson, Niebuhr and Associates created the Surveys of Policy Makers/ Influencers and Corporate Leaders and Survey of Parents and Students for the Minnesota Private College Council.
The Foundation/ Corporation Progress Reports was prepared by Kathleen Dombross in 1991.
The Task Force Report on Bethel College and Bethel Seminary Insitutional Relationships was prepared for PAAC at the request of Sherm Swenson.
The Report on the Bethel Student Attitude and Behavior Study was written by Philip Anderson and Philip Peterson in 1961.
One Bethel study is untitled and dates to 1969.
The Faculty Development Program folders date to 1980 and were submitted to the Bush Foundation.
In 1992, Ronald Harris submitted the Vision Faculty/ Student Development Program Final Report, a 3-M Foundation Sponsored Project.
The Adjunct Faculty Guide dates to 1990 and details academic policies and procedures, faculty welfare, and campus life.
The Community Commitments Handbook compiles the policies and practices of the Bethel Community, dated 1986.
A series of studies were conducted in the late 1950s and early 1960s and held in black folders, touching on topics such as student transfers, the relationship of the college with the denomination, and the Tri-College Association on the feasibility of consolidating facilities with Northwestern and St. Paul Bible College.
The Studies of Bethel and Higher Education folder holds a series of studies dating to the late 1950s, such as "Why a Church-Related College", "Current Developments in the Teaching of Foreign Languages", "An Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Our Program for Developing Student Leadership", and "Report on Study of the Retiring Pension Fund". Many of these were kept by D.O. Moberg.

Abstract
The Bethel Reports collection contains reports, studies, and communications from Bethel College and Seminary regarding varying aspects of the school, departments, and administration. Some date to the former Snelling Avenue campus, but the majority are from the Arden Hills campus. The main college departments featured in this collection are Education, Social Work, and Nursing. The Seminary also has a large portion of the collection.
Custodial History
This collection was transferred to the History Center at varying times and by different people and departments, few of which were recorded.
