Historical note
Bethel Academy began in 1905 at Elim Baptist Church of Minneapolis with Arvid Gordh as the first principle. A new building was constructed on the corner of Como and Carter Avenues in 1907. In 1912, A.J. Wingblade took the position of principle. In 1914, the seminary started by J.A. Edgren combined with the academy to become Bethel Academy and Theological Seminary of the Swedish Baptist General Conference, under the ownership of the Conference as of 1913. G. Arvid Hagstrom became president of the combined schools. In 1914, Thomas Frankson donated land across from the state fair grounds on Snelling Avenue to the school. The seminary building was constructed that year, and the academy building in 1915. In 1920, the combined schools were renamed the Bethel Institute. In 1931, the Junior College was added. The name of the school was changed in 1945 to Bethel College and Seminary.
