Historical Note

The Baptist General Conference Young People's Commission oversaw the BYPU, Baptist Young People's Union, which later became the Conference Youth Fellowship. In 1934, the Commission added the words Bible School to its title, taking on responsibilities of Sunday School guidance. In 1942, the Bible School and Young People's broke into two separate Commissions, but by 1946 they had come together again under one Board. William Tapper served as the Bible School and Young People's Director from 1943 to 1948. From 1953 to 1977, Lawrence Swanson served as secretary of the Board. In 1970, the Board of Men's Work, the Board of Women's Work, and the Board of Bible School and Youth Work were combined into the Board of Christian Education. L. Ted Johnson served as Executive Director of Christian Education from 1977 to 1989. In 1985, the Board of Christian Education was renamed the Board of Educational Ministries.
