Scope and Contents
The Seminary Dean's Office collection dates between 1985 and 2009 and spans 4.5 cubic feet in three boxes.
The three Faculty Appreciation Dinner folders contain material from 2001 and 2003 to 2005. They contain event programs, guest lists, and planning information.
The Cross Cultural Learning Grant folders date between 1996 to 1997 and 2001 to 2009. The grant supported faculty teaching abroad. The Achieving Cultural Diversity grant proposal was submitted to the McKnight Foundation in 1990 to train faculty about teaching multicultural students. In 1989, the Minnesota Consortium of Theological Schools submitted a proposal to the McKnight Foundation, described in a planning and fundraising report by Scully Associates, the submitted proposal, and committee folders. Other grant documents are kept in a general Grant folder, such as one from the Kresge Foundation and Scripture Press. The Classroom Without Walls proposal to the Lilly Endowment dates to 1992 for preparing faculty for distance learning. The general Lilly Endowment folder dates between 1982 to 2002, which contains proposals and reports regarding different grants applied for by the seminary. The Lilly Endowment report dating to 2004 is from the program Improving Leadership Preparation for Congregational Ministry. Another proposal from 2004 was titled Making Connections and was not accepted by the Lilly Endowment.
The Seminary Village Child Care proposal dates to 2002 as Bethel considered a child care center on campus.
The Board of Regents Dean Reports date between 1992 to 1994. The Board of Trustees dates from 1998 to 2001 and contains more reports and meeting notes. One folder has lists of Trustees from 1998 to 2000.
The Seminary Executive Team folder dates between 1996 and 2000 contains mostly meeting minutes.
The Faculty Excellence Awards dates from 1996 to 1999, with nomination information and award certificates.
The Center for Spiritual and Personal Formation ensured that biblically relevant spiritual and personal formation principles were incorporated into the curriculum. The folder dates primarly to 2001 and 2002.
The Counseling folder contains details about the Seminary's relationship with the Counseling Center, counseling professionals, and courses taught on counseling.
The Seminary Survey from 2001 was completed for a research project on schools of theology, in which Bethel participated.
The Dallas Willard visit folder dates to 2003, containing mostly planning documents and agendas for the week-long series on spiritual formation.
The Lelan Harris article is titled "An Introduction to the Streams of Christian Spirituality and the Stages of Christian Formation." It dates to 2002.
The Seminary Strategic Redesign Group folder contains a report from 1995.
The Binder contents folder contains loose papers that appear to have been a part of a binder at one point. The contents include a faculty profile, student profile, academic programs, and finances, dating to 1986.
The Retreats folder holds documents from the Seminary Banquet from 2004, a Marriage Retreat from 2000, Faculty retreats from 2001 to 2002, and Bethel West Dinners in San Diego. The Seminary Executive Leadership Retreat dates to 2000 and contains agendas and notes. The Burning Heart Retreat folder contains two retreat books from 1986 and 1987 from retreats directed by Nancy and Carl Lundquist. The Life of Devotion Retreat folders date between 1993 and 1995; these retreats seem related to the Order of the Burning Heart.
The Self-Study Steering folder holds the report put together by the Self-Study Steering Committee, dating to about 2000. The Self-Study, Higher Learning Commission folder dates to 2000 to 2001, holding accreditation reports. The Self-Study, Association of Theological Schools folder dates to 1998 to 2003, containing institutional profiles and material relating to accreditation. The Self-Study Report folder from 2001 contains the Report of a Joint Comprehensive Visit to Bethel Theological Seminary for the Association of Theological Schools and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Association of Theological Schools/ Higher Learning Commission proposals folder dates to 2003, containing follow-up reports and petitions regarding the Seminary of the East. The North Central Association of Colleges/ Association of Theological Schools studies contains similar information to the previous folder, with IPEDs data for peer institutions for Bethel Theological Seminary.
There are five folders of Seminary of the East syllabi dating to the late 1990s.
The Curricular Concerns folder deals with Bethel Seminary's relationship to polity denominations other than the Baptist General Conference, particularly United Methodist and Presbyterian. The United Methodist Church Seminary application folder holds an application allowing Bethel Seminary to be approved for the education of Methodist students preparing for ordination, denied by the United Methodist Church.
The Center for Strategic Ministries folder dates to the early 1990s. It holds correspondence and workshop agendas.
The Marketing folder contains marketin plans for military chaplaincy, advertising information, and a 3 Year Marketing Plan from 1998.
The Arbitration folder discusses the Minnesota Uniform Arbitration Act from 1985.
The By-Laws folder dates to 2001, containing by-laws for Bethel College and Seminary.
The Baptist General Conference Standing Resolutions document was compiled in 1993.
The Multicultural Student Meeting folder dates to 2001 and 2002, containing a report regarding issues of teaching and learning for multicultural students at Bethel Seminary, and information regarding a faculty meeting with international and multicultural students.
The Baptist General Conference Annual Meetings folder contains lists of speakers from the annual meetings. The only dated meeting is from 1999.
The Graduation folder from 2004 contains information from the Graduation Committee, mostly planning documents.
The Bibliographies of Theology and Ethics booklet was written by Robert Rakestraw in 1998. It includes Seminary faculty favorites.
The floppy disks are labeled Thesis Listings, Instructor Information, Winter, Policy, Old Instructor Guidelines, Greg, Marketing, Equivalence, CL Roster, MFS-Old Program, D. Min, Syllabus for Ministry of Writing from 2000 from Roger Palms, Graduation, Thesis, Form Letters, and Summer.
The International Students folder dates to the early 2000s. It holds programs for the International Student Festivals, lists of international students, and minutes from International Students meetings.
The Women in Ministry Report dates to 1989.
The North Central Career Development Center folder holds a contract for services from 1992, as well as information agreeing on guidance and counseling provided to faculty and seminary students.
The Missions folder dates between the 1980s and the 1990s, emphasizing the goals of missions through the Bethel Seminary. It holds applications for summer missions programs from students.
The Correspondence folder contains a variety of letters and memos dating to the late 1990s.
The Class Preparation and New Faculty folder contains faculty orientation information.
The Students folder contains a list of alumni that became pastors at various churches, some correspondence regarding international students, and a letter from a student evaluating the seminary.
The Faculty Excellence Awards folder holds the nominations of seminary faculty from their colleagues.
Two folders contain faculty and staff information, such as the faculty scholarship, presentation services, correspondence, and position openings and fulfillments.
The Faculty Committees folder holds committee assignments between 1999 and 2004. The Seminary Vision 2001 Committee folder holds the reports of the committee dating to 1992, planning for the future of the Seminary. The Faculty Personal and Professional Growth Committee folder dates between 1984 and 1993. The Multicultural Affairs Committee dates to 2001.
The Curriculum/ Degrees folder contains some syllabi and proposals for programs. The In-Ministry Program folder dates to the 1990s, regarding the start of distance learning at the Seminary. The Modular Masters Program folder describes the program that allowed for distance learning, students coming to campus only one evening a week. The Theological Studies after Five program was for evening classes. The Lifetime Education Seminary Program permitted any alumni to audit classes. The Summer Sessions dates to 2002 and 2003. The Intensives Course folder dates to 2001. The Doctor of Ministry Redesign folder dates between 1995 and 2000. The Doctor of Ministry Program Student Manual is titled Church Leadership and Congregation and Family Care Tracks. The Master of Arts in Christian Thought folder contains the program proposal from 1996. The Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Ministries folder contains the program proposal from 1995. The Master of Arts in Children and Family Ministry folder contains the undated program proposal. The Master of Arts in Transformational Leadership folder contains the undated program proposal. The Youth Leadership folder contains program information in this field of study. The Program Development Task Force folder dates to 1992, describing the changes to program development.
One 5 Year Plan folder dates to 1997. Several copies of the Strategic Planning drafts date to 2004 and 2005, with the approved 5 Year Plan dating to 2005.

Conditions Governing Access
The staff folders contain some job applications and historic salary information, which should be removed before researcher access.
Historical note
What became the Bethel Theological Seminary was founded by John Alexis Edgren in 1871, who led the school until 1887. Eric Sandell served as dean from 1887 to 1889, and Carl Gustaf Lagergren from 1889 to 1922. J. Arvid Gordh served as dean from 1922 to 1925, and Karl J. Karlson from 1925 to 1948. The first American-born dean was Edwin J. Omark, who served 1948 to 1964. Gordon G. Johnson served from 1964 to 1984 during the transition to Arden Hills. Millard Erickson served from 1984 to 1992, Fred Prinzing from 1992 to 1994, and Leland Eliason from 1994 to 2009, when this collection ends. After Eliason, David Ridder served as dean until David Clark took over in 2013. Clark served until 2017, and Peter Vogt became dean in 2019.

Custodial History
It is unclear when this collection was transferred from the Seminary Dean's Office to the archives. It appears to have been following Leland Eliason's tenure as Dean and Provost, ending in 2009.
