Historical note

With the latest documents dating to 2007, this collection likely comes from Bethel University's Office of the Provost during the transitional period of Jay Barnes entering the President's Office in 2008. Though H. David Brandt is listed as the first Provost in 1988, the Bethel’s Office of the Provost likely developed out of the Dean of the College position and folders in the collection include documents from Virgil Olson, Dwight Jessup, and others who held that position. The collection seemingly accumulated over the years, potentially inherited from one Provost to the next.

List of Provosts: H. David Brandt (1988-1995) Jay Barnes (1996-2008) Deb Harless (2008-2021) Robin Rylaarsdam (2021-present)

Arrangement

The collection is composed of folders of documents across 13 banker boxes, spanning 19.5 cubic feet. The collection maintains a previous arrangement and is organized in alphabetical order. There are two longer series at the end of the collection: the first is from the CCC (Christian College Consortium) and the second contains folders pertaining to the various majors and programs at the College/University and Seminary.

Custodial History

The collection was likely received by the Archives around 2008 during the transitional period of Jay Barnes entering the President's Office. It contains documents from the provost's office from Barnes' tenure and also files from earlier provosts. The collection was formally processed in July 2025 by Archives TA, Ellie Heebsh. Heebsh divided up overfilled folders into smaller files, numbered the collection, removed and restricted appropriate documents, and created a finding aid. The entire collection was moved into 13 new acid free boxes.
