Scope and Contents

This collection primarily contains talks given by Jay Barnes during various events for various audiences, including chapel, faculty retreats, and meetings.

The Academic Freedom file ranges from 2019 to 2021, dealing with the challenges of Academic Freedom and how the concept was addressed.

The Alcohol Policy Change file contains documents from 2007 and 2008, and focuses on revising the Covenant for Life Together to allow alcohol use by employees.

The Blog Posts are primarily dated from 2009 to 2012 and are religious in nature.

The Dispute with the US Department of Education file deals with the 2013 dispute regarding the government's testing of private colleges' financial-responsibility, their methodology and criteria.

The Fairness for All file dates to 2018 and details Barnes' statement to the American Unity Fund regarding conservative religion and rights for homosexuals.

The Sermon on the Mount: "Things We Do In Private" Chapel CD is a recording of Jay Barnes' chapel presentation from March 19, year unknown.

The Christmas Card Planning Binder contains the presidential Christmas cards during Barnes' tenure as Bethel President, as well as the documents planning their distribution.

The Holy Land Journey booklet from 2017 describes the trip the Barnes and Bethel community members took to Israel, and contains photographs.

The nine picture books were printed from Shutterfly. They show images of Bethel, the Bethel Cabinet, several trips abroad, the Barnes' presidential inauguration in 2009, and Bethel themed t-shirts Barnes wore during his time at Bethel.

The Proclamations by Governor Tim Pawlenty file holds two documents signed by the Minnesota governor, one for Bethel Board of Trustee Day on June 26, 2004, and one for Bethel University Day on May 6, 2005.

The General file contains inaugural ephemera, the Wellness Center groundbreaking poster, Barb's magnet handout from Jay's retirement from Bethel, stickers congratulating the class of 2020, and other material.

The majority of the 2023 Acquisition series are presentation notes for talks Barnes gave at various events. Other materials in this series include the recording of an artist talk given by Eugene Johnson in 1995, located on a DVD titled "Meditation of a Potter". The Spokesperson Training binder dates to 2016, and was created by A. Larry Ross Communications. The Strategic Coalition Resource Book dates to June 2014 and provides data from Bethel for analysis. The Messiah College folder dates to the 1980s and 1990s before Barnes came to Bethel. The Lifestyle Statement and Revision Group folders contain policies on dancing and pregnancy, and revision discussions in 1995 and 1996. The 2019 Partnership Meeting for Bethel and Converge folder contains the agenda, presentation notes, Bethel's Affirmation of Faith and Covenant for Life Together, and other supplemental items from the meeting. The Dan Nelson Financial Planning folder dates to 2000. The Diversity folder holds talks given by Barnes regarding anti-racism, Black Lives Matter, Act Six Scholars, and BARRC. The Historical materials folder contains materials kept by Barnes involving the history of Bethel during Lundquist's presidency, as well as pamphlets and fliers from Bethel.

Conditions Governing Access

Most of this collection is open for researcher use. The folder for the 2019 Partnership Meeting for Bethel and Converge is open for researcher use, but not allowed to be used in publication until January 1, 2029.
