Scope and Contents

The Philippine Missions collection spans four cubic feet over three boxes, and dates between 1950 to 2007.

The History folder holds written histories of various aspects the Philippine mission work, such as a history of the work on Masbate, lists of locations the communists controlled in the Philippines, and the mission agreement between the BCP and the Japan Baptist Church Association (Rengo).

The Statistics and Data folders gives information on Philippine churches, church workers, a 1990 census project, and a book of graphs from the 1970s. A separate folder is dedicated to documents from the BCP Leadership Training Needs survey from 1975. A final folder holds census data from 1989.

The Minutes folders contain meeting minutes from the BGC Philippine missions, the Philippine Field Council, and the Executive Committee. They date between 1950 and 1989. The Trustee Meetings folder holds meeting minutes dating between 1958 to 1985.

The Board of World Missions folder holds reports and meeting minutes from the BGC Board of World Missions dating between 1968 and 1989. The Mission Board Ideas folder hold documents from a corresponding folder from processing.

The Constitutions folder contains the guiding documentation for the Field Council of the Philippine Mission of the Baptist General Conference, and from the Cebu District of the BCP. The Constitution folder for the Baptist Conference of the Philippines contains iterations and revisions to the constitution.

The Policies folder holds documents such as Principles and Practices of Missionary Work, Dating Relationships for Short Termers, and policies for the Joint Work Program. A separate Guiding Principles and Policies document from 1988 is held in a separate binder. The Philippines Field Manual folder dates to 1985 and contains the Constitution and By-laws, church planting guidelines, and information about loans.

The Newsletters folder contains some issues from Bayanihan: Baptist General Conference Global Filipino Outreach, Unreached Peoples beat!, Balita, People Reaching People, The Channel (Daluyan), the Gabacungan News Letter, Harvest Link, Philippine Church Growth News, "Ang Tingog...", The Philippine Ecumenical Review, and some personal missionary newsletters. The Lanog folder holds the paper published by the Baptist Conference of the Philippines and dates between 1967 and 1973.The Voice was the official organ of the Baptist Conference of the Philippines and dates from 1975 to 1981. Harvest Echoes was the monthly newsletter of the Baptist Conference of the Philippines and dates between 1981 and 1988.

The Missionaries folders hold information about specific missionaries, as well as generalized missionary information. The folder on Ferris Hough holds mostly correspondence specific to him.

The Correspondence date between 1955 to 1994.

The BGCPM and Baptist Conference of the Philippines collaboration folders document joint programs and agreements of support. Specific folders detail information about the Joint Work Program, the Joint Evangelism Board, the Joint Policy Council and the Joint Executive Committee.

The Sunday School folder contains mostly information about Sunday School publications.

The folder entitled Children, Youth, Christian Education holds various documents, such as the Bible Training Center commencement program from 1990, Youth Conferences documentation, and the 1994 annual report from the Children's Shelter of Cebu. A College of the Shepherds in Manila yearbook from 1989 is called "Harvest Season".

The Baptist Theological College folders hold information about the school in Cebu City. There are convocation and commencement programs, catalogs, rosters, school board minutes, the constitution, and the Gospel Trumpet newsletter.

The Speaking in Tongues folders date to the 1970s and deal with a controversy over speaking in tongues that arose during that time amongst Philippine baptists. The folders hold position papers on the subject.

The Women folder holds information about the women's organization KAK, including lists of members.

The Bohol District folder contains mostly handwritten notes about missionary work in the area.

The College Avenue Discipleship Manual folder holds a draft of the manual published by College Avenue Baptist Church in San Diego.

The BGC Annual Meeting from 1989 was held in South Dakota. It contains the details concerning missions discussed at the meeting.

The Lindstedts folders are materials specific to Marwin and Ruth Lindstedt, missionaries to the Philippines. The general folders hold information about retirement plans, a certificate of appreciation from the Baptist Conference of the Philippines in 1990, an interview transcript with Pastor Gonzalo and Ruth Lindstedt, financial support information, and other materials kept by the family. Correspondence are in a separate folder. The Deputations folder dates to 1989 and contains information about travel expenses. A folder labeled "Mr. Eastlund" holds documents the Lindstedts found while cleaning out their files.

Marwin and Ruth Lindstedt published Partnership: The History of the Baptist Conference of the Philippines in 1989. Several folders contain information they gathered as they researched for the book, as well as drafts.

The BCP Annual Meetings folder holds information from the conferences held by the Baptist Conference of the Philippines, dating between 1962 and 2006. A separate program from the 6th Biennial Assembly from the BCP dates to 1990.

A program from the Baptist General Conference annual meeting at Bethel College and Seminary dates to 1987.

The Reports folder contains a report from the Lindstedts, coordinator reports to the Field Council, and the General Secretary's report from 1994. Three copies of the 5th Biennial Assembly Report date to 1988.

The Media folder holds information about media evangelism in audio visual work and literature.

Two folders of financial information contain budgets and expenditures.

The Planning/Strategy folders contain information about various initiatives to evangelize in the Philippines, such as a church growth strategy. One planning folder dates specifically to 1986 and 1987.

One oversized folder holds documents in the Filipino language.

The Churches folder holds information about churches in the Philippines, including Mandaue City Baptist Church and Bogo Baptist Church. Anniversary booklets from First Baptist Church in Cebu City detail the history of the church.

The Philippine Baptist Churches folder contains the Constitution and By-laws of the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches and an action program plan document.

The Legal documents folder holds information regarding real estate in San Remigio, a court case involving property in Danao City, and an interview with an attorney in Manila regarding disposition of land holdings.

Historical Note

The Baptist General Conference Board of Foreign Missions sent its first appointed missionary, Agnes Erikson, to the Philippines in 1948. The Cebu Baptist Association in Bogo, Cebu, later named the Baptist Conference of the Philippines, was organized in 1954. The Baptist Bible School of Cebu, later named the Baptist Theological College, was started in 1958. The women's work organization Kababayen-an Alagad ni Kristo, or KAK, was formed in 1960.

It is unclear when this collection was donated to the History Center. It was donated either by the Baptist General Conference Board of Foreign Missions, or Marv and Ruth Lindstedt, Philippine missionaries.
