Scope and Contents

The South Shore Baptist Church collection covers one box and dates between 1936 and 1982.

The Financial folder contains an account book from South Shore State Bank, receipt lists, treasurer reports, and budgetary information.

The Annual Reports folder contains organizations' reports between 1936 and 1939, as well as one from 1967-1968.

The Meeting Minutes folder dates between 1936 and 1940 and holds business meeting minutes.

The Correspondence folder dates to 1936 to 1939.

The series Later Acquisition corresponds to a later donation and is kept together in this series. The bulk of the materials date to the 1960s.

The General folder contains various documents, such as pulpit committee records, historial records, flyers and programs, newspaper clippings, and Trustee meeting minutes from 1963.

The Contstitution and By-Laws folder include ammendments made in the 1960s.

The folders of Bulletins date between 1958 and 1964.

The Business Meeting folders contain minutes dating between 1957 and 1964.

The Special Meetings, Evangelists folder holds letters, programs, and advertisements for various meetings and events involving evangelism.

The Appraisal Committee folder dates to 1958 and contains meeting minutes.

The Attendance Records folder conatins counts of church and Sunday School attendance.

The Annual Reports date between 1956 and 1982, with 1978 and 1979 missing.

The Men's Fellowship folder contains the organization constitution, meeting minutes, financial records, and a banquet program.

The Sunday School folder holds retreat information, Camp Hickory advertisements, programs, and attendance records.

The Building, Construction folder dates to the 1960s and focuses on the campaign to build the Education Building.

The Membership folder contains membership lists and directories from some years between 1929 to 1962.

The Correspondence folders include various church letters, especially regarding membership of individuals.

The Financial folder holds contribution statistics, treasurer reports, and mortgage information.

The Statistical Reports folder contains membership, expenses, contributions, missions and Sunday School statistics, among other data compiled to send to the Baptist General Conference.

Biographical / Historical

Third Swedish Baptist Church was organized on August 20, 1882. In 1893, Tabernacle Baptist Church was organized as a daughter church of Third Swedish. Tabernacle constructed a new church on the corner of Coles Avenue and Cheltenham Place, laying the cornerstone in 1910. The two churches merged on August 3, 1926 to become South Shore Baptist Church. They met in Tabernacle's former building. An addition was added to the building for education in 1966. The church was renamed Christ Bible Church of Chicago sometime after 2005.

This collection is arranged in Archivist imposed order for the first four folders. The series Later Acquisition is primarily arranged in its donated order, with a few changes.

Custodial History
