Historical note

First Swedish Baptist Church of Sioux City was organized in 1874 with eight charter members, all from Gagnef, Sweden. It was incorporated under the laws of Iowa in 1881. They shared a building with the Covenant Church on Court Street near Seventh until they purchased the lot at Tenth and Virginia Streets in 1884. The building was later sold to a Lutheran church and moved off-site, and a new building was constructed on the same lot in 1904. In 1924, the church was renamed Central Baptist Church, and by then, services were being held in English. An educational building was added in 1951. A new church building at 3222 Pawnee Place was constructed in 1971. In 1980, the church decided to leave the Baptist General Conference. In 1995, they moved to a newly constructed church building at 4001 Indian Hills Drive.
