Biographical / Historical

The Lagergren Family Papers collection contains materials relating to Reverend Dr. Carl Gustaf Lagergren and his family, including his adopted parents, Per and Maria Lagergren, his wife, Selma Westerlund, and his children, Gustaf, Siegrid [Benson], Selma, Anna, and Maria.

Carl Gustaf Lagergren was born on June 21, 1846, in Östersund, Sweden and adopted by Per and Maria Lagergen. Through his youth, he attended Sundsvall Elementar Läroverk, Östersund Högre Allmänna Läroverk, the College of Östersund (1869), and the University of Upsala (1873). Carl Gustaf Lagergren married Selma Westerlund on his birthday in 1873, and together they had five children—one son and four daughters. During his early career, Lagergren worked as a teacher of Swedish literature and language and served as a principal for an upper school for two years. From 1871 to 1889, he served as Pastor, first for Upsala Baptist Church and then for Sundsvall Baptist Church. In the early 1890s, took a post as Pastor and Professor of Systematic Theology at the Swedish Baptist Theological Seminary of the University of Chicago and moved his family to America. In his time at Morgan Park, Chicago, Illinois, he became well connected with other Swedish Baptists in America and his daughter, Selma, attended and graduated from the University of Chicago. Dr. Lagergren’s final career move was to the Swedish Baptist Theological Seminary at the Bethel Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he worked as the Dean of the Seminary.

In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, Dr. Lagergren was a prolific writer with several published theological works and sermons, which have subsequently been translated from Swedish to English. Dr. Lagergren also worked as an editor of the monthly publications, “Evangelisten,” and “Svärdet och Muselfven.”

Dr. Carl Lagergren was a monumental figure in the Swedish community in America and in Sweden. He was a key member of the Swedish Baptist church, but was also a friend and classmate of King Gustaf V of Sweden. Among several merits, the Reverend Dr. received two honorary degrees and was knighted to the Swedish Royal Order of the North Star on August 28, 1930.

Dr. Lagergren died on October 27, 1941 at the age of 95, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Two of the Lagergren daughters, Anna and Selma, shared a very close relationship and carried on their father’s work in the Swedish Baptist conference throughout their own lives. Anna Lagergren was the Director of Seminary at Bethel for a number of years. Selma Lagergren served as a missionary in the Philippines. They retired together to Palm Beach, Florida.

Arrangement

The custodial documentation suggests that Norris Magnuson or G. David Guston originally organized The Lagergren Family Papers and placed the materials into a dedicated filing cabinet. It is unclear whether the order is maintained from the original donation or was organized further by a former Archivist.

In Ellie’s processing of the collection, she maintained the given order, but removed empty folders and replaced non-acid-free folders. All materials were then transferred from the four-drawer filing cabinet into nine labeled boxes and reshelved in storage.

Custodial History

Most Lagergren archival materials come from major donations: 1. From 1974 to 1976, Anna Lagergren worked with Archivists G. David Guston and Norris Magnuson to donate her family’s materials. 2. In 1990, Jeannette Bakke, a relative of the Lagergrens, donated several mixed materials, including scrapbooks, literature, the 50th Anniversary medallion, correspondence, and theology source materials.

Other small sets of material have come in since the 1970s, such as specific correspondence, objects, and translated works have been donated by Siegrid Lagergren, Anna Lagergren, Linda Gianoulis, and Roger Hanson (translator).

Processing Information

From late summer of 2023 through March 2024, Ellie Heebsh, Archives TA, re-processed the collection in order to create a digital collection and to move material into new boxes in a different area of storage. At the time of processing, most materials were stored in a dedicated filing cabinet for the Lagergren Family Papers, purchased for the Archives by the Lagergren family.
