Scope and Contents

This collection covers 4 boxes and spans from 1890 to 1989. The majority of the collection is made up of ledgers of meeting minutes, member lists, and finances.

The BYPU ledgers record the history of the Baptist Young People's Union chapter of the church.

The Old Records box series holds the documents that came from a box labeled "Old Records of the Grandview Baptist Church (Grand Avenue Baptist) Davenport, Iowa" and "Hedberg Insurance Agency." The box holds various documents, such as correspondence, statistics, membership lists, and notes. The box's lid has been retained.

The Evens folder holds programs and advertisements for various events, including the Centennial Anniversary of the church.

The General folder holds various items such as the church By-Laws, choir meeting minutes, and handwritten notes, evidentily written by Perry.

The Legal progerty documents folder contains mostly mortgage information and property deeds.

The wood block pictures appear to be for plate printing. Of the oversized photographs, three are long rolls. Two are of the congregation in front of the church around the 1920s. The other is the Baptist General Conference annual meeting in St. Paul in 1944.

Historical note

Swedish Baptists first arrived in Davenport, Iowa in 1969. Although they worhsipped in church buildings in Davenport, they were members of the Rock Island Swedish Baptist Church in Illinois. The Swedish Baptist Church in Davenport was officially organized in 1889, and the Rock Island Church deeded the property of their Davenport Mission on the corner of Le Page (Grand Avenue) and Sixth Street to the newly organized church. In 1924, the congregation changed its name to Second Baptist Church, then again in 1931 to Grand Avenue Baptist Church. In 1951, they moved to a new building at 1814 East Locust Street and changed their name to Grandview Baptist Church. In 1972, they moved into the building at Ripley Street and Northwest Boulevard.

Arrangement

The arrangement of this collection is mostly imposed by the archivist during processing. Hedberg had labeled folders of materials, but the labels did not correspond to the contents. The original order was primarily retained in the Old Records box series, with the earlier material in the box rearranged to fit their dates, and the later material in the box maintaining original order.

Custodial History

This collection was compiled and saved by C. Perry Hedberg. The collection was donated to the History Center at an unknown date. It is unclear whether Hedberg donated the materials and the centennial information in the Events folder was added afterwards, or if it was donated after Hedberg's death in 1985.

Processing Information

Some ledgers were processed for mold. The Berean Class ledger cover was removed due to mold.
