Scope and Contents of the Records
This collection consists of records documenting George Brushaber’s tenure at Bethel College and Seminary and Bethel University including correspondence with internal colleagues, BGC pastors, BGC leadership, and others; official statements from several groups regarding the open theism controversy; BGC and internal meeting documents; and other miscellaneous items related to Bethel during Brushaber’s time at the University.

Biographical Information for George K. Brushaber
George K. Brushaber grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the only child of a pastor. He attended Wheaton College for his undergraduate degree, and went on to earn master’s degrees in philosophy and divinity and doctorates in epistemology and metaphysics. He was ordained while completing his Ph.D. at Boston University, and served as interim pastor of many New England churches. The dean of Westmont College for three years, he held the same position at Bethel for seven years before becoming president. The institution’s 4th president, Brushaber served for 26 years. A steady visionary and energetic leader, he led the institution through physical changes, including 19 new buildings or additions, and difficulties like the open theism controversy of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. He oversaw a 102% increase in enrollment and two new schools as well as the transition to Bethel University near the end of his tenure.

This series contains records of George Brushaber's activities as President of Bethel College and Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota (1982-2008), as well as documents from before and after his tenure.

The majority of these records were donated from the Brushaber family directly to the History Center.

The majority of these records were donated directly to the History Center by the Brushaber family in 2008 following President Brushaber's retirement.
