Mounds Midway School of Nursing collection, 1914-2021
Scope and Contents
The Mounds Midway School of Nursing collection dates between 1914 and 2021. It spans 12 cubic feet in 8 boxes.
The Historical Society Ledger Inventory lists donations to the historical society, some of which are now in this collection, but not all. The Historical Society folder contains information about the Historical Museum housed at the Midway Hospital, a certificate of incorporation from 1993, acquisition information from Bethel, and a DVD of the history of the school.
The History folder contains information on affiliated schools, the consititution and by-laws of the student association, and some Minnesota legal information. A History of Mounds-Midway School of Nursing, 1907-1967 was written by Adella Espelien. Mounds-Midway Memories, 1944-1947 was written by alumni and compiled into a book. The Mounds-Midway School of Nursing book records memories from the class of 1949. The class of 1956 memories are compiled into a booklet Hamline University School of Nursing Mounds-Midway Division, from the 50th reunion in 2006.
The Financial folder dates mostly to the 1930s.
Various event programs include Honors Day, chapel bulletins, awards convocations, banquets, cappings, and a Diamond Jubilee program from 1967. The Graduation folder dates from 1926 to 1970.
The Families folder contains family information of alumni, especially family connections to the school.
The Faculty folder contains lists of faculty, as well as faculty/staff surveys.
The Philosophy and Objectives folder includes training program pamphlets, the Mounds-Midway Award, and a information regarding the Mounds-Midway School of Nursing and Bethel College.
There are two folders of advertising information, such as bulletins and brochures.
The Bulletins include course information. The Lamplighter were student handbooks.
The photographs are of students, alumni, and graduating classes.
The History and Activities scrapbook contains clippings and photographs. The Capping scrapbook contains mostly photographs. The Chorus scrapbook holds photographs of the choir.
The Yearbooks date between 1928 and 1983.
The Miscellaneous Articles about Graduates scrapbook contains photocopies of articles and writing about general history and students, such as Ida Isaacson, Marilyne Gustafson, Doris Rehnberg, Sandra Dennis Torjesen, and others.
Four scrapbooks contain obituaries of nurses, doctors, medical staff, and faculty.
The Maureen Juarez scrapbook contains printouts of the newsletter Student TXT put out by Julie DeHaan, Pamela Friesen, and Maureen Juarez. Juarez was a faculty member at the school of nursing from 1970 to 1972, then became faculty at Bethel University.
The Catalina Cresencia Velasquez item is a memorial display for a former student from Bolivia.
The Swede Hollow folder contains written histories of the location, which was very close to the Mounds Park Hospital.
The Nursing and Hospital newspaper clippings folder contains newspaper articles, pamphlets, booklets, and newsletters.
The Classes series contain individual class materials, such as news articles, correspondence, commencement programs, and photographs. The majority of the series contains alumni update information.
The Mounds Park Hospital folder contains some loose copies of Park Points, article clippings, and a program from the hospital's 50th anniversary in 1957. There are photographs of the old and new hospital building. Mound Builder was a hospital newsletter, and the folder dates from 1924 to 1932. Park Points was another hospital newsletter, and the folder dates between 1966 to 1972. Two folders of Capsule, another hospital newsletter, date between 1981 and 1986.
The Midway Hospital folder contains a few hospital newsletters, newspaper articles, and a program for the ground breaking ceremony from 1961. There are photographs of the hospital in the next folder. The Orbiter was a hospital newsletter, dating from 1968 to 1971. The HealthEast folder contains a newsletter Today from 1988 and 1998; a second newsletter C.A.R.E. dates to 1997.
The Baptist Hospital Association folder contains a newsletter Baptist Hospital Bulletin from 1930, some newsletters Baptist Hospital Fund Bulletin from 1970 and 1973, a report from 1964, and a newspaper clipping. The Northwestern Baptist Hospital Association folder contains a history and some statistics from the hospitals.
The Alumni Association series contains a 1941 bulletin, correspondence, and financial information. The By-laws date to 1955 and 1991. The Committees folder include member lists and minutes. The Events folder contains programs from events such as banquets and homecoming teas. There are correspondence dating mostly to the 1950s. The alumni lists list graduates from 1909 to 1951. The Alumni Newsletter dates from 1948 to 2021.
The Missionaries folders contain newsletters, clippings, and correspondence from medical missionaries, mostly alumni. The International Nurse is a newsletter dating from 1988 to 2005.
There are several folders of individual alumni. Ruby Eliason was a missionary in India and Cameroon. The Janice Turnblom Joregenson memorial fund was established in 1968.
There are several artifacts from the museum, including three nursing caps, nursing pins, two pitchers, and a bedpan.

Historical note
The Mounds Park Sanitarium School of Nursing opened in 1907, with the first students graduating in 1910. Students lived on the fourth floor of Mounds Park Hospital until a home was built at 222 Earl Street in 1921. The school's name was changed to Mounds School of Nursing in 1922. The school became affiliated with Midway Hospital in 1926, when they changed their name to Mounds-Midway School of Nursing. They began to cooperate with Bethel Junior College in 1936 to provide some college courses. During World War II, the school was accepted into the Cadet Nurse Corps training program in 1943. The school merged with Hamline University in 1949. In 1958, the Baptist Hospital Fund reassumed responsibility of the school, and the last class at Hamline graduated in 1960. The school was accredited in 1961 by the National League for Nursing. The first male students were admitted to the school in 1971. The last class graduated in 1983, after which nursing students began to attend the new nursing program at Bethel College.
The Baptist Hospital Fund, Inc., originally known as Mounds Park Sanitarium Association, and later the Northwestern Bapitst Hospital Association, operated Mounds Park Hospital, Midway Hospital, and the Cobb Hospital. The Mounds Park Sanitarium was opened in 1906 by Swedish Baptists at 200 Earl Street in Saint Paul.The Midway Hospital was founded on Snelling Avenue in 1920, then operated at 1700 University Avenue from 1927 to 1997, when the building became the HealthEast Corporate Tower.
The Alumni Association was originally founded in 1912. The Nursing Museum, opened in 1991, was located at the HealthEast Midway Campus. It closed in 2018.

Custodial History
This collection was donated from various alumni to the Alumni Association's Mounds-Midway School of Nursing Historical Society. It was displayed as part of a historical museum at the Midway Hospital at 1700 University Avenue in St. Paul. In 2017 and 2018, the collection was donated to the Bethel Archives.
Existence and Location of Copies
The contents of the DVD located in the Historical Society folder were copied to the Archivist drive. The film can be viewed on the Digital Library.
Several yearbooks have been digitized and are available on the Archivist drive.
