Scope and Contents
The Bethel Seminary San Diego collection dates between 1861 and 2022, although the school itself operated for a much shorter period. The collection spans 31 cubic feet in 22 boxes.
There are 16 general scrapbooks dating from 1977 to 1995. Later scrapbooks, dating from 1999 to 2019 hold photographs of graduation. The 25th Anniversary scrapbook dates to 2003. It holds a written history of the school, copies of historic articles, and photographs of the celebration.
The poster board photographs were for display. There are images of the prayer room, the library, the building, the Marine base, and Chaplain Charles Anderson.
There are many negatives, especially in roll cannisters, as well as many photographic slides, in Box 8. Many CDs containing mostly photographs, but also other documents are kept in this series. Other loose photographs are located in folders.
The Dean's Office sub-series came from the San Diego Dean's Office. The History folder contains writings on the history of the school. The Board of Executive Advisors documents span 11 folders and date from 2005 to 2018. They hold member biographies, agendas, meeting minutes, and supplementary documents. The Marketing Strategies folder holds data, meeting minutes, marketing plans, and recruiting plans. The Market Analysis binder was created by Aslanian Market Research and dates to October 2014. The Provost's Strategy Team folders date from 2005 to 2009, holding meeting minutes and supplementary data. The folder on Anglican Diocese holds information on seminary requirements for Anglican ordination. The Student Senate folder contains the constitution and purpose statement of the organization, as well as some meeting minutes from the early 2000s. Bethel Seminary: Shaped by Godly Leadership was a booklet published by the Friends of the History Center in 2006. The Feasibility Study dates to June 2013, written by John Hughes, Kyle Healy, and Andrew Ruiz to study potentially adding a new program. The Integrative Portfolio folder contains information on the requirement for students starting in 2008. The Work Days folders contain information on faculty work days and retreats. The Faculty Meetings folder dates between 2007 and 2017. The Servant Leadership Center folder contains a proposal for the center, which provided education outside of formal educational programs. The Programs folder contains information about the degrees offered at the seminary. One folder is specific to the Hispanic Certificate programs. Several folders hold the contents of the binder for the Application for Approval to Operate a Degree Granting Institution in California, dating to 1995. Planning information for the 25th and 40th Anniversaries date to 2003 and 2017. The Vision Grows folder contains documents from the capital campaign to fund expansion from the early 2000s. The Newsletters folder contains Good News, SW Friends, Bethel Southwest, and VisionBuilders, dating from 2001 to 2017. A wooden block from the A Time to Build campaign dates to August 19, 1989. The Dedication and Celebration book dates to February 9, 2013 and has photographs of the updated facility.
There are three original issues of the New York Times dating to 1861, describing the Civil War. There are two issues of the Evening Tribune from San Diego dating to 1933, headlined "U.S. Indicts Gold Hoarder," and 1963, headlined "Kennedy Dead Shot At Dallas." There are three issues of The San Diego Union, dating 1964, headlined "Gen. MacArthur, Hero Of Three Wars, Dies," 1970, headlined "Thousand Flee Raging County Fire," and 1972, headlined "A Visit to the Whales."
The Library folder holds information about book donations, as well as planning for the new library building dating to the late 1980s.
The Chapel folder contains chapel service schedules and programs.
Tracing the Contours of a New Higher Education Landscape study dates to 2005. The study was done by Gino Pasquariello, with a follow up survey included in the folder as well.
The Old Testament Search Committee folder contains documents from the search committee looking for a replacement faculty member for Ronald Youngblood.
The Southwest Baptist Conference folder holds information from the district of the Baptist General Conference, including the annual gathering in 2005.
There are two folders and one binder of planning information for the 25th Anniversary in 2003.
The Institute of Theological Studies Evangelical Seminary Deans' Council folders date between 2004 to 2005. They contains membership information, school statistics, and meeting minutes.
The Trans-Regional Courses folder dates from 2004 and 2005. It holds course information for classes held accross the three locations of Bethel Seminary.
The Quarters to Semester Implementation Team folders date to 2011 to 2013. They contain Sem2Sem information, correspondence, policies, and planning information.
The All-Personnel Meetings folder dates between 2002 to 2005. One document in this folder is the Bethel Anti-Racism and Reconciliation Commission. The Staff Meeting folders date between 2000 and 2010. The Faculty Meeting folders date between 1991 and 2004.
The Statement of Faith folder contains the requirements for seniors to write a statement of faith.
The Provost Strategy Team folders date between 2001 to 2005.
The Newsletters date between 1979 to 1995.
The Advisory Council folders date between 1994 and 1997. The Advisory Council worked with administrative leadership at Bethel Seminary West under the direction of the Board of Regents.
The New Wineskins Initiative was a network of alumni and others assisting ministry with finance and prayers.
The Property sub-series contains information about the acquisition, construction, and dedication of the properties and additions. Many of the dates listed are the dates of the dedication of the building and many of the documents date to earlier.
The Faculty Meetings folders date from 2005 to 2019.
The Course Schedules date between 1977 and 2010.
The Programs and Courses folder contains lists of courses, program requirements, seminars, and some syllabi. There are two courses with folders: Encountering the World of Islam and Perspectives on the World Christian Movement. Marriage and Family Therapy is a program folder containing faculty information, program requirements and courses. The Global and Contextual Studies program folder holds a program proposal from 2005 by William Stone.
The Center for Transformational Leadership folder contains some meeting minutes and syllabi.
The Development folder holds development meeting minutes, donation and fundraising information, and strategic plans, all dating to the early 2000s. The Capital Campaign booklet and its related Campaign Committee binder date to 1999 and 2000. Other strategic plans from the Development office are in a separate folder. The Development Assistance folder contains meeting minutes and agendas dating to the early 2000s. The Fundraising/ Development folder contains newsletters such as BethelInvestor and Bethel Tapestry, as well as programs for the Annual Fund, and fundraising plan documents. There are several booklets, including Stewardship: The Bethel University Foundation, Bethel Seminary Scholarships, Taking the Next Step Campaign, Giving with Vision to Bethel, and The Vision Grows: The Bethel Community Life Center. A Bethel folder contains fundraising information such as a CD called GiftLegacy from 2004. The Friends Dinner folder dates between 1998 to 2013 and holds programs and planning information.
The Developing Teamwork at BSSD binder is an administrative summer workshop project dating to 2005.
There are several folders and booklets of marketing materials advertising Bethel.
The Bethel Style Manual binder was created by the Office of Communications and Marketing, dating to 2004.
The Building a Better Bethel binder describes financial needs, such as getting updated technology, new mission programs, and medical training models.
The Employees folder holds employee farewell programs, installations, some job descriptions, and organizational charts. The Installation of John Lillis folder holds programs, newsletters, and planning information.
The College Avenue Baptist Church book is a membership directory from 2004.
The Association of Theological Schools Bulletin holds a membership list from June 1991.
The Meridian Southern Baptist Church book holds photographs of a Vietnamese church celebrating 35 years of the publication Anh-Sang.
Becoming a Leader of Purpose was written by Gordon Klenck and Mark Vickers. It was published by The Leading Network and is a workbook for leadership.
The Data and Statistics folder contains mostly enrollment information.
The History folder holds writings and newspaper articles about the history of Bethel Seminary San Diego. The Historical Display folder contains planning information for a display about the history of the school.
The binder dating to 1966 and 1968 predates the San Diego campus. It contains documents such as "Issues in Christian Higher Education", the annual report of the president, a development program, a report given by Lundquist in Berlin from the World Congress on Evangleism, issues of The Bethel Focus, "The Equipping Ministry", a convocation address by Elton Trueblood, and issues of the Standard.
The Student Senate folder contains its operations manual, handbook, and consitution. There is a separate folder detailing the retreats held from 2014 to 2019.
Word Alive was a series of seminars offered by Bethel Seminary San Diego on Christian issues. The folder dates to 1999 and 2001.
The Self-Study Report for the Association of Theological Schools and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools dates to December 1990. It is specific to the seminary located in St. Paul.
The Report to the Board of Regents came from the Seminary Vision AD 2001 Committee in June 1992.
The Fourth Annual Christian Management Institute was presented by Financial Executives of Christian Organizations. It's book is titled Management: The Christian Approach. It was held in March 1981 at First Baptist Church of Lakewood in Long Beach, California.
There are two volumes of the Self-Study Report from May 2001. It was submitted to the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and the North Central Association of the Higher Learning Commission.
The Focused Report on Bethel Theological Seminary West Campus for the Commission of Higher Education North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Association of Theological Schools dates to January 1984.
The Development Office Self Study for the west campus dates to 1984.
The Accreditation folder dates to 1999 and 2000, containing the Self Study Steering Committee minutes and plans.
The Women's Organization folder contains a document proposing such a group.
The Whittier Classes folder holds information about classes held at the Whittier Area Community Church as part of the World Class Seminary initiative.
The Leland Eliason folder contains documents kept by John Lillis documenting his correspondence with Eliason.
The Bennie and Melody Goodwin folder contains material from two faculty members, including correspondence and students' personal assesments of class.
The Surveys and Studies folder holds notes from the Best Christian Workplace survey from 2003, an evaluation from 1996, and a task group's findings from 1994. An alumni survey was done in 2000, spanning two folders, one of which is specific to San Diego. An Employee Satisfaction Survey was conducted in 1997.
The Training for Adjuncts folder dates to 2010, mostly containing a printout of a slideshow.
The Philippines Theological Education folder holds correspondence regarding the Baptist Theological College and a report by Glen Scorgie about his time teaching in Manila.
The New Living Translation folder holds a document of the translation philosophy regarding gender-related language in 2005.
The International Council for Evangelical Theological Education folder contains programs, workshop documents, and other writings from conferences in Thailand and Hong Kong.
There are three folders of Faculty Retreat information, dating from 2001 to 2005. They contain handwritten notes, programs, and readings.
There are several 5 Year Plans or Strategic Plans for Bethel San Diego in this collection. They date from 1983 to 2007. The Vision AD 2001 and Vision AD 2018 date to 1993 and 2007, respectively, with the dates in the titles the goal years for the strategic plans.
The Financial information dates from 1995 to 2007. Many of the documents are audits of Bethel College and Seminary and Bethel College and Seminary Foundation. A separate document contains the financial statements of the Baptist General Conference dating to 2003 and 2004.
There are several Bethel annual reports dating between 1997 to 2006.
A Program for the Bethel Biennial Meeting dates to 2002.
The Campus Master Plan for Bethel Seminary San Diego was put together by Architects Mosher/Drew/Watson/Ferguson in 1998.
The Vision Grows folders are from the capital campaign, specifically the 2001 event.
The Student Handbooks folder holds student guides and handbooks for new students.
The Academic Vision folder contains a Dean/Executive Officer's Year End Report from 2007, enrollment report from 2007, and five year strategic plan from 1998.
The Enrollment Summit folder dates to 2004 amd contains an enrollment report with data and statistics.
The Educational Institutions folder contains documents from the Council for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education: Initial Statement of Reasons for Regulations Affecting Degree-Granting Institutions.
The Commencement series primarily holds programs from the graduations, but also include lists of candidates for the ministry, newspaper articles, and event planning.
There is a binder and two folders of Performance Improvement Project Plan information. The project was facilitated by Team Interplay on October 15, 2008. It provided information about strengths and weaknesses to enhance growth for staff, faculty, and students.
There are 16 VHS tapes in the collection. They contain several specific to capital campaigns, advertisements for the school, and several events. The video Vision Dawns was the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the school.
26 audiocassettes record commencement speeches dating from 1982 to 2006, as well as a few sermons from College Avenue Baptist Church.
A series of folders contain Faculty/Directors Meetings date from 2002 to 2015.
The Board of Executive Advisors folders date between 2006 to 2017. A separate folder contains the documentation of the Business Affairs Committee, a sub-committee of the Board of Executive Advisors.
Four Library folders contain policies, collection lists, and acquisitions.
The Bethel West Update was a newsletter. The folder dates between 1986 to 1994.
Bethel Southwest was a newsletter dating from 2007 to 2012. A separate newsletter, SW Friends, dating from 2005 to 2007, is contained in the same folder.
The Correspondence folder dates betweeen 1986 to 1995, many from Clifford Anderson. Another letter from Fuller Theological Seminary from 1970 is on the innerrancy of scripture.
The Church Renewal Institute folder contains programs from the events dating from 1989 to 1995.
The Pre-Campaign Survey Report was presented by Cargill Associates in Fort Worth Texas. It dates to October 25, 1984. A second report from the same date from Cargill Associates are Recommendations for the capital campaign.
The Building folder contains architectural renderings, a memorandum of agreement with College Avenue Baptist Church, and a ground lease agreement from 1988.
The dedication folder dates to 1990, and contains planning material for the dedication of the building event.
The Fundraising folder contains information about the Vision Grows campaign, Friends of Bethel West Dinner invitations, and a Time to Build campaign.
Two more commencement programs date to 2021 and 2022 for students who were enrolled before the school had closed.

The Bethel Seminary West binder contains tabs on Assumptions and Agreements, Student Enrollment, Course Offerings and Enrollments, Faculty Rosters, Planning and Projected Curriculum, Finances and Projected Budgets, Faculty Reactions, Student Reactions, Other Evaluations, Advisory Council Records, and Position Description for Resident Dean.
The Five Year Study binder dates to March 16, 1983 for the Board.
There are two copies of the Doctorate of Ministry binders. They date primarily to the early 1980s.
The Bethel West Task Group binder dates to 1994. It contains working papers from the Task Group as they set strategic directions for Vision A.D. 2001.
The San Diego Program Expansion Missional and Fiscal Review binder is from August 1998. Its focus was on the Center for Graduate and Continuing Studies program.
