Scope and Contents

The Vancouver Bible Institute collection dates between 1918 and 1981. It spans 14 cubic feet.

The Yearbooks series runs from 1946 to 1978. Some of the yearbooks also double as catalogs and annuals.

The Catalogs series runs from 1954 to 1979 with course listings.

The Reports series dates between 1920 to 1980. The Annual Reports folder contains reports from 1920 to 1939. In 1960, a Curriculum and Accreditation Policy was drafted and revised. There are two copies of the 1965 President's Report to the Board of Trustees. The Registrar's Reports binder dates between 1964 and 1977 and contains enrollment statistics. There are three folders of President's Reports dating from 1969 to 1980, reporting to mostly the Board of Trustees. The Self Evaluation and its Appendices from 1972 was presented to the Accreditating Association of Bible Colleges. The Report on the Examination for Associate Status was put together by Willard Aldrich, Joseph Wong, and Frank Rice and dates to 1972. The Self Evaluation Report and its associated Annexes date to 1975. The Evaluation Committee Report dates to 1975. One folder contains a Progress Report to Accrediting Commission dating to 1976. There are two Reports to the Board of Regents from 1977. One folder holds a Report to the Board of Regents through the Executive Secretary for Higher Education from the president from 1977, Development Report to Dr. Robert C. Anderson by Lynn Archer from 1977, and financial statements. A Final Research Reports to the Board of Regents by the Ad Hoc Committee of long range goals was put together by Richard Hanson, Gunnar Kronholm, Garvin McGettrick, and Harold Phillips, dating to 1978. A Review of Options by Carl Lundquist dates to 1978, dealing with the possible closure of the school. Another 1978 report was to the Board of Regents, submitted by Gil Anderson, Robert Lilly, Lynn Archer, and G.W. Anderson. There are three copies of the report from the Board of Regents closing the school, with a supplemental report to the Board of Regents by Robert Anderson in 1977.

Four faculty handooks date from 1972 and 1976.

The Finance series holds budgetary information, financial reports, and capital campaign information. The Budgets/ Indexes folders date from 1960 to 1980, containing proposed budgets, indexes to financial statements, and auditors' reports. The Financial Statements folders date between 1977 and 1980, put together by Ellis, Kruse and Co., chartered accountants. The LIFE folder holds materials from the Living Investment For Eternity campaign to raise money for Vancouver Bible Institute. It contains meeting minues, correspondence, and specifics about the campaign from 1974. The Pension folder holds information about retirements and pensions at the time of the school's closure in 1978.

The Constitution folder holds revisions to the school's constitution and by-laws dating to around 1977.

Several folder are specific to individual principles and presidents of the school. These include Robert Watt Sharpe, Walter and Alice Ellis, Joseph E. Harris, Morse G. Archer, Walter Anderson, and Robert Anderson.

The President Job Description, Candidates folder dates to 1967 and 1968, directly before Walter Anderson became president. The Presidency Committee folder dates to 1973, before Robert Anderson became president.

The Library folder holds mostly material on the sale of the library materials after the closure of the school.

The Organ folder contains fundraisers for the organ, correspondence, and funding information.

The folders of Brochures and Advertising contain marketing materials for the school.

The Building and Campus series contains mostly building program documents, starting in 1964. The Property Committee was in charge of selling the campus following the school's closure. The Appraisal of Property dates to 1978.

The History folder contains a timeline of the history of the school, as well as a few writings on that history. It also includes some cards and bulletins from historic events to the school, as well as the minutes of the first committee meeting in 1918, and two issues of "Pastor's Page" from 1977.

There are five folders of meeting minutes and reports from the Administrative Committee, dating from 1960 to 1978.

The Executive Committee folders hold minutes from the 1950s and 1970s.

A black binder holds minutes from the Committee of Directors and the Administrative Committee, dating to the 1970s. The Committee of Directors folder contains meeting minutes and reports from 1962 to 1981.

The Faculty Meeting Minutes folder dates primarily from 1977 to 1978.

One folder holds staff meeting minutes, dating from 1964 to 1970. There is also a document from "Study Made by the Staff Committee of the Vancouver Bible Institute Regarding the Duties of Some of the Administrative Staff Members of an Institution such as this." It dates to 1965.

Two binders of Student Council meeting minutes date between 1957 and 1978.

An undated questionnaire was sent out, and there are five folders of responses. Questions include the purpose of Vancouver Bible College, its relationship to the BGC, and its focus on Canada.

Several folders of events hold brochures and bulletins from events such as convocation, anniversaries, and commencement. There are guest books signed by visitors for specific events or just generally.

The Alumni series contains information about specific graduates of the school, as well as general statistics. Arthur and Edna Haynes served at Maple Ridge Baptist Church in British Columbia. Their folder contains a photograph of Japanese church members evacuated during World War II. Margery B. Lindsay graduated in 1920; her folder contains mostly correspondences. One folder contains a collection of alumni ordination and commissioning bulletins and news articles. Two folders of statistics provide data on graduates, programs of study, and positions after graduating. There are several student lists from every year of the school's history. One folder contains information about alumni that live in British Columbia. The Alumni Action Plan was put together by Lynn Archer, Director of Development and presented to the Alumni Steering Committee. The Alumni Association folder holds event programs, lectures, and mostly correspondence. The Gleaner was the Alumni Association newsletter, which ran from 1932 to 1978. The Missions folders contain information about alumni working in the mission field around the world. One folder is specific to Norman Johnston, missionary in Bolivia.

The Student Association folder holds lists of presidents and bulletins.

The Bulletins folder holds report bulletins dating between 1928 and 1931.

The Calendars folder dates from 1920 to 1976.

The Degree Structure folder holds papers on the structures and titles of degrees at the school.

The Organization folder contains information regarding the organization of the school and its affiliations prior to 1974.

The Accreditation folder holds documentation from the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges.

The Name Change folder documents the change from Vancouver Bible Institute to Vancouver Bible College in the early 1970s.

The Fire folder holds news articles about the arson at the school in 1976.

The Legal Matters folder holds mortgage paperwork, information about legislation regarding the Societies Act, land purchase documents, and indebtedness documents.

Two News Articles folders contain newspapers and clippings on the college or people, many of them from The Standard.

The Statistics folder contains data on enrollment, graduates, salaries, and teaching hours.

Nine folders of correspondence date from 1942 to 1981, mostly to and from members of administration and the Baptist General Conference.

Vision was a school newspaper that ran from 1962 to 1978. There are two folders of loose issues, and two other binders with duplicates.

The Voice was a school newspaper that started in 1960. The folder runs until 1968.

The American Association of Bible Colleges folder contains membership information, reports to the Executive Committee, and an accreditation certificate.

The Merger with Christian Training Institute folder holds meeting minutes and correspondence from the proposed merger with the Alberta school from 1964 to 1967.

The Directories and Handbooks folder contains staff and faculty listings, as well as student handbooks.

Two folders contain studies and surveys, one for action for the Baptist General Conference, the other for acceptance in the Baptist General Conference. They date from 1956 to 1958.

The May 1962 meeting folder holds information from a Board of Trustee meeting, where they discussed the status of Vancouver Bible Institute within the structure of the Baptist General Conference.

A blue folder is labeled Dr. Waren Magnuson. It holds information from the Committee of Directors of the school, registrar information, and Administration Meeting minutes.

Two folders are labeled Relation to Bethel. They document a relationship study conducted in 1969, reports on the potential of absorbing the school as an extension of Bethel, and arrangement of school boards.

Three Board of Trustees folders are from the Baptist General Conference board. They hold meeting minutes, recommendations, and reports to the Board.

The Affiliation with the Baptist General Conference folders hold documents regarding the Baptist General Conference absorption of the school during the 1950s, as well as discussions afterward regarding how the school should be administered.

The Closing series deals with the school's closure in the late 1970s. Many documents include correspondence, proposals to the Board of Trustees, and meeting minutes discussing the issue. The Carl Ludquist folder contains a report put together by Lundquist evaluating the school, as well as correspondence. The Financial folder contains records of the budget deficits that eventually caused the school to close, including bank records. The Response to Protests folder contains letters responding to correspondence from people who wanted the school kept open. The Rentals folder contains mostly financial information about renting out the property after the school closed. Several folders contain information on selling the campus, with most of the documentation about Pacific Bible College. One document is a legal document of the sale to the Bible Fellowship Housing Society.

The folder of class photos begins in 1918 until 1946. The campus folder contains photographs of both old and new campus. Two folders of people contain pictures of students and alumni. There are two boxes of photo slides. The silver box contains pictures from 1956 to 1965 of the old campus, LeRoy Gager, and Morse Archer. The plastic box holds pictures from 1965 to 1967, many of the new of campus. There are two folders of oversized photographs, as well as one external to a folder. There are three scrapbooks from the 1960s and 1970s, one specific to the construction of the student centre.

There is an 8mm film reel from 1962 labeled Student Life at Vancouver Bible Institute. There is an 8mm audio reel that is unlabeled.

The Development Story is a large notebook encouraging donations to the school to help its mission to teaching students.

There are two large fabric maps that appear to have hung on a wall at some point. One is from the American Baptist Missionary Union of missions in southeast Asia. The other is of Missions of the American Board on a map of the world from 1896.

A letter opener is labeled "Vancouver Bible Institute, The Changeless WORD for a Changing WORLD".

One plaque dates from 1967 from the dedication of Vancouver Bible Institute.

An embosser imprints a seal labeled "Vancouver Bible College Society."
