Abstract

"This video is for Christian audiences interested in global evangelism. Some information is sensitive and should not be shown to the general public." Short history of the work of William Carey in India, who pioneered churches and schools. BGC missionaries were expelled from northest India in 1969 leaving about 200 churches. Now the Northbank Baptist Association of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has 80,000 baptized members from 17 people groups. Indian evangelists and church planters continued the work left by the BGC missionaries. The most growth in Assam has taken place among the Boro people. Church growth in Arunachal Pradesh has exceeded expectations (largest people groups: Naga and Nyishi). About 40,000 from the Nyishi and Adi people groups have come to Christ, making up the membership of 350 churches. More recent responses to the Gospel have taken place among the Apatani (in the past 15 years, 3,000 baptized, 5 churches planted). India is a complex and spiritually challenging country in which to spread the Gospel. It is made up of 4,635 people groups, who speak over 1,600 distinct languages. The majority of the population is Hindu (which recognizes millions of gods); second is Muslim. The caste system permeates the culture. Extreme Hinduism has brought about hate campaigns against Christians. Some states have anti-conversion laws. Persecution has not stopped the growth of Christianity. Over 100 evangelists and church planters are supported by the churches of the Northbank Baptist Association. 14 Christian schools provide education to several thousand children in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Pastors and church workers are trained through Zion Bible College and Arunachal Bible Training Institute. Baptist Christian Hospital (plans for updating and providing training for medical staff) and Baptist Christian Health Centre. Literature distribution provides thousands of printed material each year. Literacy training helps over 1,000 adults learn to read and write; a Bible is provided at the end of their training. The support from the BGC is needed and appreciated. Viewers are encouraged to pray that millions would find Christ, that new Christians would remain faithful, the ministries of healthcare and education would relieve suffering, new churches would be started among unreached peoples, and funding would be available to upgrade hospitals and Bible schools.
