Abstract

Greg and Rebecca Parker have been appointed by the BGC as the coordinators of a new children's village for homeless children in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and are requesting prayer and monetary support to accomplish this goal. They learned of the need from Rick Stark (missionary to Brazil) and Don Reed (Executive Minister of the Northern California Baptist Conference). They will be working with Rian Contro, a ministry of Primeira Igreja Batista de NiterĂ³i (First Baptist Church of Niteroi), which serves the poor children of the slums of Rio de Janeiro, providing meals, clothing, and Biblical education for nearly 400 preschool and school age children. Rian Contro also provides two health clinics (66 doctors and 12 dentists), a vocational/technical school training 840 youth and adults, and a drug rehabilitation program. Because Brazil has a significant problem with promiscuity and lack of birth control, there are many unwanted children that are homeless. Land has been donated to Rian Contro to build 50 homes for homeless children, each unit housing 10-12 children and houseparents. Comments by Dr. Nilson Fanini (Pastor, 1st Baptist of Niteroi). Rebecca (a nurse and homeschooling mother) will be teaching children and young people about God, morality, and purity, teaching mothers how to be good parents, and teaching in the vocational school. Greg will coordinate the building of the children's village. The homes will be built by people on short-term missions trips.
